Dove Emblem

Grace Sarah Cagnina DiDonato, 95, passed into Heaven on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Ellis Hospital. She had been residing at home with her daughter and her family for the past four years when she was suddenly stricken.

Grace was born on January 31st, 1919 in Schenectady, NY. She was the daughter of the late Laura (Brucemi) and Joseph Cagnina. Upon graduation from Nott Terrace High School, she went to work for General Electric for the next 15 years going from a position in the factory to a secretary in the Engineering Department and stayed at General Electric until she married the love of her life, Tristano "Dietz" DiDonato on March 24, 1953. It was at that time they began their venture together of running many businesses. The first being Marco Polo Restaurant and Dixie Fried Chicken. Grace retired for a while after they sold both business and stayed at home, raising her family. It was at this time that her great love of gourmet cooking began. Much to her family's delight she loved reading cooking magazines and entertaining and baking with her new found recipes. Grace came back out of retirement in 1982 to help run family businesses, Glen Travel Plaza in Fonda, NY and Fox Run Parc Travel Plaza in Coxsackie, NY along with her husband, son and daughter and continued doing so until she retired for good in 1999 at the age of 80.

She was a member of the women's division of the Sons of Italy in the 1970's, St. Gabriel's Church and the seniors at St. Paul the Apostle Church in 2010 and enjoyed being involved in their activities and trips. Later on in life, she loved being with her family at her summer home on Saratoga Lake.

The family would like to thank Hospice and all the private aides that provided excellent care and compassion for Grace, which allowed her to be able to stay at home with her loving daughter and her family in her final years.

Grace was predeceased by her husband Tristano "Dietz" DiDonato in 2007 and her siblings, Jenny Rotunda, Josephine Calabro, Joseph Cagnina, Samuel Cagnina, Rose Iovinella, Lena Stipano, Angelo Cagnina and Harry Cagnina.

Grace is survived by her loving family, daughter, Laurie (Richard) McDonald and son, Dennis (Susan) DiDonato and cherished granddaughters, Tristina and Tara McDonald and Eileen and Alyssa DiDonato and Grace's sister, Laura Gabriele and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 11th at 12 noon at Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Ave., Schenectady, NY. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 to 12 noon prior to the funeral service. Entombment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Mausoleum.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Grace's memory to Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
